Born August 9, 1944, in Providence, Rhode Island, David was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose warmth and kindness touched everyone he met.
He is survived by his beloved wife of more than 60 years, Audrey M. Gillis; their three children, David Michael Gillis Jr. (fiancée Shandra), Susan Gillis Krawczonek (husband Jon), and Daniel Gillis (wife Chrystal); and his cherished grandchildren, Margaret, David III, Justin, Jamie, and Jon, who will carry his stories and spirit forward.
David proudly served his country in the Army Reserves during the Vietnam era. After his military service, he continued dedicating his life to helping others as a firefighter and member of Search and Rescue in Margate, Florida. He was the kind of man who ran toward trouble when others ran away, always ready to lend a hand and pull someone to safety.
A man of deep and unwavering faith, David served as a deacon in his church, quietly living out the values he believed in. His steady strength, humility, and compassion made a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. It was often said that you couldn’t help but love David the moment you met him—he had a way of lighting up every room he walked into.
He loved fishing and cherished the peaceful mornings spent by the lake, surrounded by nothing but quiet and reflection. Yet above all else, family was his greatest joy. Nothing meant more to him than the people he loved.
David will be remembered for his faith, his service, and his fierce, simple love for those around him. His legacy lives on through his family and the many lives he touched.
Now he rests peacefully in the arms of Jesus.
