Oh My.
I am truly one of those people left much better off through my time with Dave. Our times at CrawfordHouse [Maryville College] in rocking chairs provide immeasureable insights.

Mr. Powell was a force to be reckoned with. Everything Dave did, he seemed to do with purpose. I studied under him, as so many others have, at such a pivotal point in my life and his own, graduating with a BA in English Literature from Maryville College the spring of 2009. Dave left Maryville that year, and his exit from Anderson Hall is embedded into my memory, bringing tears to my eyes; the final lecture he gave having been brimming with students standing in solidarity. However, what most clearly sticks out when I think of the wiry professor who squatted for emphasis as his hands grasped the podium and his eyes crinkled is his insistence, lecture after lecture, that love is a verb. Love is action. He never really even liked “love” as a word all that much, “loving” was better; it was a gerund. It was infinite. It involves continuous care and pruning and, yeah, you students may think it’s corny, but it should be cherished. That deep passion, for the environment, for people, for Liberal Arts, for his family...he is absolutely right. I’m loving you, Dave. 

Dave indeed was hilarious and challenging. He was also  one of the most creative people I have ever known.
 More than once while talking and rocking  in rocking chairs, he simply stopped, looked at me and said "Why not? Just go do it. Don't wait". 
And you know what? He was usually right.

Dave's presence was a gift. He was honest, witty, smart, and kind. Unforgettable.

Thinking back on my time as a MC student, there are 6 professors who were instrumental in my educational career and success.  Glen Hewett, Lyn Coning, Harry Howard, Peggy Cowan, and Dave Powell.  From Dave I learned that a terminal degree is not required to be an educator.  A passion for teaching and an ability to meet students, and people, where they are, identifying their strengths, and using humor to overcome challeges allowed Dave to rise above in the classroom.   He was funny, insightful, smart, honest......and loved.  Forgive me Dave, I know there is a gerand in my tribute - you did the best you could :) !

I worked with Dave at Maryville College and have warm thoughts of him in Isaac's sharing with students and others.  He was so witty and always had something funny to say.  A true teacher at heart, Dave impacted the lives of everyone who knew him.  He was so loved by the campus community.  I am so sorry to hear of his passing.  My condolences to his family.  May God grant you peace and comfort both now and in the coming days.

Dave was a demanding, supportive, hilarious and deeply committed colleague.  I am so sorry to hear this sad news.

Dear Gail and family. I worked with Dave for many years at Maryville College. He made a different!  He was loved by students and staff. He challenged us to be better and I will never forget him. He is missed!

Dave Powell was the finest teacher I ever had.  

Aristotle said somewhere that "those who educate children well are more to be honored than they who produce them; for these only gave them life, those the art of living well." 

Dave taught the art of living well, something that has remained with me two decades after his classes at Maryville College. I miss him but take heart in knowing his torch remains lit in the many he inspired. 

A poem for those who grieve, myself included. It seems written for our late colleague.
