Having a papaw like Don Byrd was like an extremely special gift from God. There was something unique in his spirit that drew people in and his acts of service to others was his passion. He always made sure that all his grandchildren knew that we were greatly loved. Some of my greatest memories were time spent on Papaw and Mamaw's farm, feeding baby cows and fawns, playing in the creek, and eating bologna sandwiches in the cabin. I loved how Papaw called me "Sissy." He started calling me that when I was very young and continued to give me that nickname until he passed. He always used nicknames for his grandkids like "sugarfoot, and doodlebug/" I also have special memories of my Papaw and Mamaw playing "Heart and Soul" together on their living room piano and all the granddaughters dancing around in utter joy. I remember many occasions when Papaw made me a banana split at 10:00 at night, something only a grandad can get away with. And oh how his grandkids loved hearing him sing "Froggy Went a Courtin" or "A Hole in the Bottom of the Sea." Those songs will forever be classics in my mind. The love and laughter we shared with our papaw is unforgettable but to me the greatest legacy he left for us was his love for Christ and his example to serve and love others as the hands and feet of Jesus.
I love and miss you Papaw and look forward to seeing you again in heaven someday. - Much Love, Sissy

My Uncle Don. I can never think of him without feeling warmth in my heart. He was an amazing man with such a great capacity to love others. He loved God and his wife and family above all. Yet he still managed to have enough love left over for others. As a child I simply knew that he loved me. There was never a question or a doubt. When he saw me and my siblings, he smiled. When we talked, he listened. As an adult I came to admire a man that loved strangers as fiercely as he did family. He loved the Lord so much. It was this love that allowed the rest of us to feel joy every time we saw him. He was truly one of the good ones. To Aunt Martha, Rick, Dale, Jeff and your families, thank you for sharing him with us and others so many times and in so many ways. I pray God will give you comfort and peace during this time and always. ❤🙏
