SMITH, DORIS JANE MAUK - of Knoxville, went home with the Lord Jesus Christ on Wednesday, June 17. She was born on July 2, 1925 in Bristol, TN. Doris graduated from Tennessee High School and Sullins College in Bristol and earned a biology degree and a minor in French at the University of Tennessee. During this time she met and fell in love with William Frank Smith, Jr. who served in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific theater during WWII. After the war, Doris and Frank rekindled their love and were married on June 26, 1953. Doris loved making a home for her husband and family and was a wonderful friend and neighbor.
As a Girl Scout leader, she shared her love for the outdoors, music, and crafts with her troop. Doris played the piano beautifully and had a lovely soprano voice. She enjoyed being a part of her church choir with director George Bitzas at Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church where she and Frank were members. An avid gardener, she was a member of the West Hills Ten O'clock Garden Club for over 40 years. Her eye for color and beauty went beyond floral arranging to painting where she excelled in oil and acrylic. Doris was a long time member of Ossoli Circle, who founded the Girls' Club of Knoxville. Doris (and Frank) proudly wore Volunteer Orange for every opportunity to attend a UT game and hostess a tailgate party. She and Frank loved to dance and would drive anywhere anytime to find live Big Band music. She enjoyed many deep lifelong friendships, and we will miss her sense of loving kindness, laughter, beauty, and elegance.
Doris's husband, Frank, passed away in 2009 and she is survived by her son W. Frank Smith, III and his wife Debra; daughter Sandy Smith Anderson and her husband David; granddaughters Katy Smith, and Kelly, Natalie, and Lindsey Anderson. Many thanks to the staff at Little Creek for the tender care of Doris these past few years. A memorial service will be held at Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church on Saturday, July 11 at 1:00pm, reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church, Knoxville, TN 37919.
Psalm 73:23-26 "I am continually with Thee:
Thou hast holden me by my right hand. Thou shalt guide me with Thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. Whom have I in heaven but Thee? And there is none upon earth that I desire beside Thee. My flesh and my heart faileth; but God is the strength of my heart and my portion for ever." KJV
