She was born on June 13, 1930, in Blaine, Tennessee, to the late Ermon Homer Byerly and Eva Lena Byerly. Dot devoted her life to caring for others. For 35 years, she worked as a psychiatric nurse at Lakeshore Hospital in Knoxville, where she dedicated herself to serving some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Her compassion and steady presence helped countless patients find dignity, safety, and hope during their most difficult times. Nursing was not just her profession, but her calling, and she exemplified the quiet strength and deep kindness that defined her life’s work.
Outside of her career, Dot found joy in the simple but meaningful rhythms of home and creativity. She was an avid gardener who turned each May into a family-wide planting event—her flowerbeds and vegetable gardens a reflection of her spirit. She also delighted in the art of stained glass, carefully crafting pieces that captured light and color.
Dot was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William (Bill) Claude Fox, former Knoxville Chief of Police, who was truly the love of her life. Their marriage was a lasting example of devotion, partnership, and faithfulness.
She is survived by her children, Vickie, Mary, and Bobby, grandchildren, Lori Lowe, Jason Lowe and Hunter Fox who carried love for their mother and grandmother in their hearts.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to those who helped care for Dot in her later years, ensuring she lived with dignity, joy, and the highest quality of life possible. The staff of Morning Pointe Hardin Valley Lantern Unit provided her with comfort and tender care. The compassionate caregivers from Care Around the Block became like family, and special thanks are extended to special thanks are extended to Sarah Malia, who served faithfully as her conservator, and her law partner, Miranda Goodwin, who ensured together that Dot had access to therapies, activities, and meaningful connections that enriched her final years.
Dot leaves behind not only her family but also a legacy of service, creativity, and love. Her memory will be cherished by all who knew her.
A private family service will be held to honor her life. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to be made in her memory to organizations that support mental health, a cause that remained close to her heart throughout her life and career.
