

SLIGER, GEORGE CURTIS - age 85 of Knoxville, faithful husband, father, and grandfather passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2011. Mr. Sliger cherished his church family at Cumberland Baptist Church, where he served as men’s Sunday school teacher, Deacon, and choir member. George graduated from McMinn County H.S., served in the U.S. Army, 1944-46, including overseas duty in Italy and the Yugoslav border, and then attended Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens. George worked for Great Lake Express, as he was elected and served Knoxville as a City Councilman, 1966-73. He later served the Tennessee Valley Fair as it’s Secretary-Manager, 1973-80. He retired as an independent agent in life and health insurance. Preceded in death by parents Carl and Grace Hutsell Sliger; brother James Sliger. Survived by loving and devoted wife of 63 years, Billie Kilgore Sliger; sons and their families, David and Sally Sliger, Suzannah and Joseph, of Chattanooga, Fred and Lou Ann Sliger, Rachel of Knoxville and John of Lexington Park, MD; brother Bryan (Roy) and wife Mary Sliger, of Englewood; sister Martha Sliger Denton and husband Bill of Oak Ridge. Family will receive friends Friday 5:30-7:30 pm at Cumberland Baptist Church with service to follow at 7:30 pm. Rev. Kerry Bond officiating. Family and friends will meet 11:45 am Saturday at Highland Memorial Cemetery for a 12:00 pm interment. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Cumberland Baptist Church.
