Marty was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and spent her early years growing up on Navajo Indian agencies in New Mexico and Arizona. Her family later moved to Maryville, Tennessee, when her father was appointed head doctor for the Fontana Dam construction project. She graduated from Maryville High School and Maryville College, and later earned her master’s degree in music from the University of Michigan.
Marty began her teaching career in West Memphis, Arkansas, and then spent a year teaching in France, where she developed a lifelong love of the French language and culture. She went on to teach for many years in the Knoxville City School System, primarily at Brownlow and Flenniken Schools. Marty deeply loved teaching and cherished her students. If a family needed food, she made sure they were fed; if a student needed clothing, she ensured they were clothed. Her compassion extended far beyond the classroom.
An accomplished musician, Marty played the flute with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. She was also a devoted daughter, lovingly caring for her parents during their declining years. An adventurous spirit, she was an avid world traveler who embraced life with curiosity and joy.
Anyone who knew Marty was fortunate to have known her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wesley and Zelma Barnwell; her sister, Mary Barlow; her brother-in-law, Robert Barlow; and many dear friends.
She is survived by her nephew, Mark Barlow; her niece, Mary Beth Brabson; and her dear friend, Jimmy Nolen, who will miss her mightily.
A receiving of family and friends with a graveside service to follow will be held at Berry Highland Memorial Funeral Home, located at 5315 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, Tennessee, 37919. The service is scheduled for December 31, 2025, starting at 11:00 am.
