Wester, Robert William Jr. –age 89, passed away Thursday, September 23, 2010. He was the only child of Robert, Sr. and Rachel Wester. Mr. Wester was a deacon and lifelong member of South Knoxville Baptist Church where he was faithful in his attendance and service until the decline of his health. Mr. Wester graduated from Knoxville High School and as a young man worked for photographer Jim Thompson where he had the opportunity to assist him during his shoots, the most recognized being the panoramic picture of the Smoky Mountains. After determining the seminary was not the correct path for him he was employed by South Central Bell (AT&T) from which he retired with 36 years of service. Most of his employment was spent in the downtown area where many knew him as “Big Hat” because of his fedora. He also trained as a projectionist and “moonlighted” in the local theaters and drive-ins. He was a member of both the Pioneers of America Telephone Union and the I.A.W.A. Theater Workers Union. Mr. Wester and his wife enjoyed traveling, especially in the mountains, and did so at every opportunity. He is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Frances and his son, James Robert. He is survived by daughter, Patricia Kelley; grandsons, Matthew and Robert (Bo); and great-grandchildren, Cameron, Alexander and Wenling.
