On Tuesday, December 27, 2022, S. Edward “Ed” Long passed away peacefully in his sleep at age 90 to be accepted by our savior, Jesus Christ. He was a celebrated Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather. Ed is survived by his sister, Barbara Smelcher; ex-wife, Barbara A. Long and long-time partner Mi-Soon Thompson and family. He was preceded in death by his father, James Long and mother, Dorothy Jinks Long; sister, Wanda Lewis and wife, Kay Long.
Additionally, he is survived by daughter, Debra Anne Browne; son, Shirley Edward “Ed” Long Jr., daughter-in-law, Tanya C. Long; grandsons, Erich J. Long (Mary), Richard T. Browne (Marina), Johnathan E. Long; granddaughter, Angela S. Long (Michael Scheiner); great-granddaughters, Isabelle and Mila and great-grandsons, Asher Long, Griffin Long and Killian Long.
Ed was born in Knoxville, TN in 1932 where he met and married his first wife Barbara Long. He moved to Washington DC and graduated from Southeast College with a degree in accounting and soon was hired in the exhibits department for the FBI. Because of his work ethic and quality, and his accounting degree, he was accepted to become an FBI agent. He successfully worked with the agency for 35 years, garnering several promotions until he retired in 1986.
After Ed's retirement, he and his second wife, Kay, opened and successfully managed a pizza restaurant until they decided to sell it in 1998 and move back to his hometown of Knoxville. This decision would allow them to be near family and, in particular, closer to his parents. Ed was able to enjoy spending time with his mother for a year until her passing in 1999. In his retirement, Ed dedicated his time in helping his siblings support their father in his senior years until his death in 2009. Ed enjoyed attending mass at Bearden United Methodist Church and enjoyed frequent visits and gatherings with his siblings. He often hosted his two children and grandchildren for visits because he valued the quality time spent with them. One of the favorite activities when visiting his children and grandchildren was watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy and having contests to see who could solve the quiz or get the correct answer first. These are memories that will be cherished forever.
A visitation will be held for Ed on Friday, December 30, 2022, 10am at Berry Highland Memorial Funeral Home with a funeral service to follow at 11am. A graveside will be held at Piney Grove Cemetery at noon.
In lieu of flowers, the Long family wishes donations to be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
