

Vernon Lee Gillian, age 84, of Knoxville, TN passed away on July 15, 2025, at his home. He was born in Dalton, Georgia. He was a Sergeant E-5 in the U.S. Army in Germany for several years where he and his team built communication lines. Vernon became a master home builder and skilled carpenter. He built many beautiful homes and crafted memorable gifts of cabinetry. Vernon was also a writer of short stories and poetry. He leaves this world a collection of his beautiful rhythmical writing.
Vernon lived with Myasthenia Gravis, a rare debilitating progressive disease for twelve years. Over time he was unable to continue home building and carpentry work he enjoyed so much. He was gracious and appreciative of the medical expertise received by many doctors, especially Dr. Steven P Rider and Dr. Brad Davis, who were so supportive in helping him live through these hard years.
Vernon is survived by his loving wife, Dr. Jeannie Gillian, who was not only his dedicated caregiver but Vernon's soul mate for 50 years. He was preceded in death by his sisters Glenda and Joan both of Dalton, Georgia and survived by sisters LaGonda, Billie and chosen sister Judy, and brothers Tex and Ricky all of Dalton. Vernon is preceded in death by his son Bobby and survived by son Paul and grandson Cordeau, and his sister-in-law Kathy of California.
A Veteran's Celebration of Life honoring Vernon will be held at John Sevier Veterans Cemetery August 8, 2025, promptly at 10:00am. (please arrive by 9:45am) Pastor Terry Williams presiding. Reception immediately follows across the street, at French Broad Veterans Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations in Vernon's memory to the Shriners Hospital for Children and/or American Red Cross.
