Ray’s life was deeply intertwined with the University of Tennessee from an early age. As a child, he practically lived on campus while his father, Sam Hinton, served as the founder and head of the Dairy Department at the University of Tennessee. That early exposure sparked a lifelong love for UT athletics. Ray was a proud UT graduate and competed as a member of the University’s Track Team. Throughout his life, he found great joy in watching classic UT games and reliving the moments that meant so much to him.
Ray’s true passion was teaching and coaching. He dedicated many years to shaping young lives through education and sports, serving as a basketball coach at Jacksboro High School and Powell High School. Known for his commitment, leadership, and care for his players, Ray made a lasting impact on countless students and athletes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hinton.
Ray is survived by his loving wife, Gale Hinton; his sons, William “Bill” Hinton, Steve Hinton (Clodi), and Mike Hinton; his grandchild, Tim Hinton; and many extended family members who will cherish his memory.
