Doris graduated at the top of her class in 1957 from Kokomo High School. She then earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from IU Kokomo, and her Master’s Degree in Education from Purdue University. She worked as a teacher at Kokomo Center Schools for 33 and a half years.
On November 4, 1960, Doris was married to the love of her life, James Allen Beckner. James preceded Doris in passing on April 13, 2016. Doris regularly attended Woodland Church of God. In her free time, Doris loved to travel. She had visited every continent and every state in the United States. She also enjoyed reading, particularly the Bible, biographies, and Little Women novels. More than anything, Doris enjoyed devoting her time to her children and grandchildren.
Doris is survived by her children, Benny (Donna) Beckner, John (Nancy) Beckner, Philip (Angie) Beckner, and Linda Bice; and grandchildren, Andrew Beckner, Stephanie Gee, Angela Gee, Gregory Gee Jr., Jesse Gee, Gabrielle Beckner, Sophie Beckner, Mollie Beckner Modrow, Boone Beckner, Tasha Beckner Lane, Megan Beckner, and Christopher Parkhurst. She is also survived by numerous great grandchildren and her dog, Rex.
In addition to her parents and husband, Doris was preceded in death by a sister, Sarah Hession.
There will be a public visitation for Doris at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home on Friday, April 26th from 11-1, followed immediately by a funeral service. Doris will then be laid to rest at Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery.
Doris’ family would like to give special thanks to her caregivers, Patsy Brown and Melissa Rybolt, as well as the staff at Home Instead Senior Care and Southern Care Hospice.
