Harley Franklin Engle, 96, of Kokomo, Indiana passed away on May 18, 2022. He was born on January 21, 1926 in Kokomo, Indiana the son of Garl Otis and Olga Patrica Engle (Petrich). In 1948, Harley married Cora "Cody" Kelley and together they had two children Marcia and Mark. In October 1977 he married Katherine Wines who preceded him in death on April 7, 2009. Harley was a proud U.S. Army World War II veteran who loved his country. He served his time in the European Theatre fighting in the Normandy Invasion, The Battle of the Buldge and The Hartung Forest. Harley was in the Lighting Strike Division, Sergeant of a mortar crew and received two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. After the war was over, his unit stayed in Berlin to oversee the liberation of Berlin. Harley's story of World War II encounters has been inducted into the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.. He was a lifetime member of the Kokomo VFW and the Purple Heart Club at Grissom Air Force Base. After 33 years of service, Harley retired from Delco Electronics as a screw machine operator. He was often rewarded for numerous suggestions as a Tool and Die Maker that benefited future success for General Motors. Harley was an avid fisherman and hunter. He loved working word search puzzles, gardening, and woodworking. Surviving relatives include two children, Marcia Keating and Mark Engle (Vicky) both of Kokomo, IN; brothers, Russell Engle (Rose) of Galveston, IN; Earl Engle of Hendersonville, NC; sister, Shirley Trotter of Kokomo, IN; grandchildren, Nicole Edwards; Mandy Ray (Matt); Andrew Keating (Cara); Kellie Burns (Sam); Deanna Toledo (Choche) all of Kokomo, IN; twelve great grandchildren; one step-daughter, Connie Mennon (Roger); and several step-grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother Robert Engle, sister Ruth Hawkins, baby sister Mary Engle, son-in-law Joe Keating, three step-sons Melvin, Thurman and Darrell Wines, and three step-daughters Carolyn Goldsberry, Karen Herrington, and Peggy Butler. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Monday, May 23, 2022 at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home 2097 West Alto Road Kokomo, Indiana 46902. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery.
