
Our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at 9:40 p.m. at Waterford Place Health Campus.
She was born in Newburgh, New York on August 27, 1923. Later, she moved to Brooklyn, New York where she graduated from high school. She joined the US Navy in October 1944, achieved the rank of Seaman 1st Class and was honorably discharged in November 1945.
After corresponding by letters with 1st Lt. Melvin W. Hobbs, Tipton, Indiana, while he was stationed at Ft. Benning, Georgia, they married on June 19, 1945 in New York City, New York. They made their home in Kokomo since 1946.
Her employment included Brooklyn National City Bank, Indiana University bookstore, then 28 years at St. Joseph Hospital radiology department, ten years for Drs. Golper and Sekulich, Heartland Radiology, then with retirement occurring in 1998.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist since 1946 and was a member of the Elizabeth Circle and did many volunteer activities. Other memberships included the DAR (General James Cox Chapter since 1973), Tri-Kappa Sorority (over 60 years as active and associate), PEO, and Altrusa. She also did volunteer work at St. Joseph Hospital and the Literacy Coalition Board.
She is survived by her children, Jane G. (Frederick) Johnson of Pettisville, Ohio, Margaret J. (Phillip) Rodewald of Bremen, Indiana, Melvin W. (Barbara) Hobbs III of Kokomo, and Thomas W. Hobbs of Griffin, Georgia; grandchildren, Timothy (Beth) Rodewald of McDonough, Georgia, Lisa (Will Dixon) Johnson-Dixon of Archbold, Ohio, Joseph (Erica) Rodewald of Ft Wayne, Indiana, Peter (Jodie) Rodewald of Bradenton, Florida, Sara Johnson of Adrian, Michigan, Matthew Johnson of Archbold, Ohio, Beth Hobbs and Benjamin Hobbs of Griffin, Georgia; and nine beautiful great-grandchildren, Kayla, Spencer, Gavin, Cameron, Jackson, Emma, Mackenzie, Haley, and Brady; one sister, Josephine Snow of Florida; half-sister, Patrice Tector of North Carolina; several nieces and nephews; and a very dear close friend, Constance Wall of Kokomo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Melvin W. Hobbs in 1978, and a sister Catherine Marti who died of polio six weeks before the vaccine was discovered.
The family wishes to express appreciation to the nurses, aides and staff at The Legacy, Waterford Place Health Campus and Guardian Angel Hospice.
The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church with Rev. Steven Butler and Rev. Larry Newberg officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home with a DAR memorial service to be held at 4 p.m. and from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday at the church.
