

Sarah June Stevens (Githens) passed Wednesday, the 26th of November, 2025 at Community North Hospital, in Indianapolis. She was born the 11th of February, 1942, in Jonesboro/Gas City, Indiana to Ernest Floyd and Annabell (Cook) Githens. She was a graduate of Mississinewa High School, class of 1960, the Mississinewa Thespians. She was a recipient of the Betty Crocker Future Homemaker of Tomorrow Award, 1960. She earned her Associates Degree in 1977, from Southwestern Michigan College, where she received the President's Award for a 4.0 GPA. She also attended Indiana University at South Bend, in 1978.
Sarah held several jobs in her life, including being a receptionist for Dr. Stark, DDS, and working for Clark Equipment Credit, both in Niles, Michigan, as well as teaching Ballroom Dance lessons. She went on to work for South Bend Freightline as an Account Manager and Koonts Wagner Electric, as an Account Manager, both in South Bend, Indiana. She later taught as an instructor at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Mishawaka, Indiana, before moving to Kokomo, Indiana, and teaching dance there as well. She also enjoyed being a DJ from 1993 until 2011.
Sarah has always been a "doer" who led by example of action. She joined the Unitarian Universalist Church in 1966 and was President of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Kokomo from 2008 until 2010. She was the Program Chairman of the Fellowship of Kokomo from 2005 until 2016. She as involved with many community organizations throughout her life including the League of Women Voters, Member,1964 to Present; Treasurer, LWV Howard County, 2015 to Present; Coordinated Assistance Ministries, 2012 to Present; the Literacy Coalition 2012 to Present; Master Gardeners of Howard County, President, 2015 to Present; Community Garden (Ivy Tech/Master Gardeners), 2012 to Present; Kokomo Beautiful - Planting Hanging Flower Pots on Street Light Poles, Downtown Street Corner Rain Gardens, 2012 to Present; Habitat for Humanity - Since at least 2000 until near 2022 (per Stevens' memory); Bridges Outreach Project 30 - 2016; Psi Iota Xi Sorority, Niles, MI; Children's Vision and Hearing Screening Committee, 1978; Psi Iota Xi Sorority, Niles, MI; and the Arts and Crafts Committee for the Niles Apple Festival,1982.
Her hobbies included ballroom dancing, gardening, home construction/remodeling, art and hand-blown glass.
Surviving relatives include her son, Kenneth Stevens; daughter, Celena Stevens; granddaughter, Jasmine Stevens; sisters, Doris Miller (Githens) and Mary Ann Coronado; and brothers, Bob Githens, Richard Githens, Steve Githens, and Tom Githens.
Sarah was preceded in death by her father, Ernest Floyd Githens; mother, Annabell Githens (Cook); and sisters, Roberta (M) Gallatin, (M) Mugrage (Githens)
There will be a visitation for Sarah on Thursday and Friday, December 4th & 5th from 4pm to 8p at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Kokomo, 1704 W. Boulevard St. Kokomo, IN 469
03-6108. There will be a celebration of life service on Saturday, December 6, 2025 from 9am to 3pm, with a memory sharing discussion beginning at 11am, and a luncheon at 12pm, also at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.
