Craig was active in sports growing up. His baseball team went to the Little League World Series playoffs in 1952. He played All-Church basketball when that was an important event in the Church’s athletic program. He always enjoyed playing golf and had many matches with son Andrew and friends. He continued playing basketball and softball on church teams for many years. He was also very active in scouting and earned the Eagle Scout award. Many happy times were spent with wife Kay and sons on fishing and camping trips to our local mountains and the Sierras.
At South High School in Salt Lake, Craig was accepted into the Naval ROTC program. He spent his University of Utah college summers on active duty as a Midshipman. After getting his degree in Economics, Craig was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy and served in the Vietnam War. As he was about to leave the Navy, he met Kay Beckstead on a blind date. He and Kay were married on July 1, 1966, in the Los Angeles Temple and just celebrated their 57th anniversary. They have been blessed with three sons: Stephen, Matthew, and Andrew and seven grandchildren: Damon, Keely, Kameron, Briton, Jane, Rachel, and Joshua.
Craig was employed for 42 years as an Account Executive with Morgan Stanley, originally known as Dean Witter.
He served in many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was Bishop of the College Ward, and from 1979-1988, was the Stake President of the San Diego East Stake. He served as a Regional Representative in the El Centro, Blythe, and Yuma areas and was a counselor to the San Diego California Mission President. From 1998-2003, Craig served as an Area Authority Seventy for California and Hawaii. He also participated on the committee for the building of the San Diego Temple and served as Public Affairs Director for San Diego County. However, he would often say that his favorite callings were as a Blazer Scout Leader and Sunday School teacher for the youth. Craig was a humble leader, loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and wanted to help people feel better and do better.
For all this and so much more, he will be remembered with deep appreciation and much love. Craig passed away July 20, 2023.
