

He was born in a family of nine siblings. His Farther was Charles Jefferson Howerton, and his Mother was Veva Loreana Handley Howerton. During his years, he grew-up in farming communities in Palestine and Robinson, Illinois.
In his middle and high school years, he participated in school sports such as football while studying. After the school day, he worked on farms, and in his middle-teen years, he was Golden Glove Boxer to make extra money for his family during the depression that started in 1929.
Once he Graduated from High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1940 to help with WWII. He served from1941 until 1946. He tried farming until 1949. He re-enlisted for the Korean conflict then he continued service until his retirement in 1975. His deployments placed him in World War II (Pacific Theater), Korea, and Vietnam.
He met his wife to be, Catherine Woodman, in Jacksonville, Florida in 1945 after the war. They were engaged in 1946 and then they married in Michigan the same year. They celebrated 65 anniversaries until her death in June 2011.
He had a daughter named Sue Ann Howerton who died in March of 2002.
He is survived by his son Scott Paul Howerton.
Norman Howerton was a great father, son, sailor, and friend to all who knew him.
Norman Julius Howerton's cremains will be laid to rest with his wife's and daughter's cremains in Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery at Point Loma, San Diego, California.
