Pete went to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at the age of 89 years old. He died of natural causes. He passed away at home in the house he originally built in 1979 in Eucalyptus Hills, Lakeside, California. The house was rebuilt in 2004 after the family home burned and everything was lost in the Cedar Fire of 2003. Pete and his family built both houses with the help of friends. He was 65 when he rebuilt the house the second time. His son Nick was instrumental in the rebuild. Dad was very grateful.
Pete loved living life. The left-handed genius could design and then build just about anything out of wood with his hands from scratch. He built many types of clocks. He loved designing his garden and grew over 350 varieties of roses and many other beautiful blooming plants with planters made of hundreds of bricks that he placed one by one to create an oasis on his property.
Pete was born and raised in San Diego. He grew up in Little Italy on Columbia Street. He attended school at Washington Elementary and Roosevelt Junior High School. Pete’s father Salvatore Bompensiero built a tuna boat and started a family tuna fishing business. Pete quit school to go out fishing at age 15 along with his brothers Mario and Joe. The boat was named after his mother, Marianna Lucia Balestreri and called the "Luanna".
Pete met his wife Shalane Stewart in San Diego on Broadway Street downtown. They were "cruzin'". He was in a car with his buddies, and Shalane was in another car with her girlfriends, when they flirted with each other and soon later started dating. They were married in Las Vegas on October 10, 1956, not too long after that. Pete is being laid to rest on what would be their 68th anniversary.
His children were born in San Diego. They are Regina Lynn Bompensiero born in 1957, Nicholas Pete Bompensiero born in 1959, and Rhonda Lea Bompensiero born in 1961. He raised his family in the San Carlos area of San Diego mostly. They moved together as a family into the new home that they built in Eucalyptus Hills, Lakeside.
He is survived by all 3 children, Rhonda and her husband Steve Bischop of Lemon Grove, Gina Spencer of Lakeside, and Nick Bompensiero of Idaho. He is also survived by his 3 grandchildren. He has one granddaughter Melani Joan Thorn and two grandsons, Vincent Pete Bompensiero, and Anthony Nick Bompensiero.
Pete will be remembered for his funny personality and witty humor. He was a likable guy. He was always the life of the party. Always having fun. He was a great cook and loved to make his ravioli and be surrounded by family. Pete came to Christ at the age of 63 and was baptized. He led his family to church on Sunday's where the entire family filled up a whole row. Pete was the kind of guy who would do a favor for anyone in need. He loved family so much and always talked about them. He will be dearly missed.
Services for Pete will be held on October 10, 2024, at 10:00am at Erickson Anderson Mortuary Chapel located at 8390 Allison Avenue, La Mesa, California, 91942. 619-466-3297
Isiah 40:31
but those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.
