Alva W. Yates Jr.

Mr. Yates was born September 7, 1920 in LaFayette, AL, son of the late Alva William Yates, Sr. and Nina Sands Yates. He graduated from Auburn University with a B.S. in textile engineering. Mr. Yates served as President of Phi Psi textile fraternity and was a lifetime member of the Auburn University Alumni Association. After retirement, he and his wife, Martha, moved to LaGrange in 1978. He was a member of First Baptist Church on the Square and the Pilot Sunday School Class. He was a former member of the Jaycees Club and Kiwanis Club in Sylacauga, AL. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Martha Pinnell Yates.

Survivors include daughter, Ellen (Jerrel) Little; son, Bill (Mindy) Yates; son, David (Ashley) Yates; grandchildren, Amy (William) Abernathy, Steve (Mindy) Little, William (Terri) Yates, Anderson (Megan) Yates, Brandon (Natalie) Yates, Justin Yates, Denson Yates, and Marli Yates; great grandchildren, Ansley and Kendall Abernathy, Jackson and Mary Ellen Little, Madeleine and Gracie Yates, Mason and Lizzy Yates, Riley and Cannon Yates; sister, Carolyn Yates; other relatives and friends.

Graveside funeral services will be held 3:00 P.M. Sunday, September 21, 2014 in Shadowlawn Cemetery with Dr. Paul Baxter and Reverend Paul Blair officiating. The gathering of family and friends will be on Sunday from 2:00 P.M. to 2:45 P.M. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for contributions be made to First Baptist Church on the Square, the American Heart Association, or Hospice LaGrange in memory of Mr. Alva W. Yates, Jr.
