Fred was born July 24, 1937, in Cartersville, GA, son of the late Truman Alexander Buchanan and Kate Cannon Buchanan. He proudly served his country in the Air National Guard and Reserves. He was a member of Franklin Road Baptist Church. Fred pastored several churches during his 60 years of ministry including Southwest Baptist in LaGrange, GA, Eastern Heights Baptist in Columbus, GA, Dykes Creek Baptist in Rome, GA, East Lagrange Baptist, River View Baptist in Valley, AL, Bethany Baptist in Pine Mountain, GA and several other churches around the state. When he wasn’t busy serving others in ministry, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, playing golf and spoiling and loving on his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Vivian Ann Bishop Buchanan, 2 brothers, Hugh Buchanan (Erma), Lloyd Buchanan (Charlotte), and 3 sisters, Dot Ford (Forest), Ruth Wilson (Willie), and Irene Blair (Joe).
Those left to cherish his memory include, his children, Jeff (Terri Alise) Buchanan, Steve (Robin) Buchanan, Andy (Kim) Buchanan, Michelle Buchanan and granddaughters Taylor Vivian and Jordan Kay; grandchildren, Heather (Ben) Huddleston, Ashton (Ricky) Zambrowicz, Kaitlyn Buchanan, David (Michelle) Buchanan, Dallas Buchanan, Caleb (Ashton) Buchanan, Landon Buchanan (Kelsie Cook), and Mason Buchanan; great grandchildren, Rook, Rhett, Ryland, Averett, Ellis, Nora, Brooks and Beau; and several other relatives and friends.
The Gathering of Family and Friends will be Saturday, February 1, 2025, from 11:00am until 1:00pm at the Troup Baptist Association, formerly Southwest Lagrange Baptist Church (1301 Washington Street). The Celebration of Life Service for Fred and Vivian Buchanan will follow at 1:00pm with Rev. Andy Buchanan and Rev. Steve Buchanan officiating. A private family entombment will follow in Shadowlawn Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully asks that donations be made to Franklin Road Baptist Church or The Troup Baptist Association in honor and memory of Rev. Fred Buchanan.
