

Ed was born December 28, 1923 in Hart County, Georgia, son of the late Ethel Satterfield Brown and Joe Rucker Brown. He was an active member of First Baptist Church on the Square where he served as a deacon and was a member of the Williams/Pilots Sunday School Class. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Barbara Fleming Brown, three brothers, and one sister.
Ed graduated from Hart County High School. Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Army during War World II and served in the China-Burma-India Theater, surviving the Burma Road March. Ed was a graduate of the University of Georgia in the field of Education and after his graduation he served as a teacher at Troup High School during which time he did additional graduate work at Auburn University. Ed later served as Principal of Hillcrest Elementary School for 27 years before retiring.
Ed enjoyed gardening, traveling, fishing, and was an avid reader. He enjoyed his sports, especially his beloved Georgia football where he was a dedicated “Bulldawg”.
Survivors include his sister-in-law, Betty Wallace of LaGrange; and numerous nieces and nephews including Ron Matheson, Susan M. O'Neal, Elizabeth B. Hood, Nancy B. Schmitz, Jan B. Hatchett, Judy B. Hawkes, and David Collins.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, January 31, 2014 in the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with Dr. Paul Baxter and Rev. Paul Blair officiating. A private burial will be in Shadowlawn Cemetery. The gathering of family and friends will be on Friday morning from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to West Georgia Hospice, 1510 Vernon Road, LaGrange, GA 30240 or a charity of choice in memory of Mr. James Edward “Ed” Brown.
