Joe was born July 13, 1956 in Frankfurt, West Germany to Thomas Jacob Westbrook, Jr. and Mary Ellen Lane Westbrook. He grew up in East Point, Georgia before moving to LaGrange at the age of 12. Joe was a graduate of LaGrange High School and North Georgia College, where he earned a degree in history. While at NGC, he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, the Corps of Cadets, and Mountain Order of Colombo. During his college days, he met the love of his life, Janice Sue.
After college, he worked in central Georgia before returning to LaGrange to join his father, Tom, in the family business, Westbrook Service and Tire Company. After his father’s retirement, Joe later became the owner. His time at Westbrook Tire taught him everything there was to know about automobiles, which later led him to join Troup County School System and West Georgia Technical College as an automotive technology educator.
Joe’s life passion was the Boy Scouts of America. As an adult, he served countless roles, including Scout Master and District Executive. Throughout his scouting career, he received top honors, including Eagle Scout, Order of the Arrow Vigil Honor, and the Silver Beaver Award. He attended multiple Jamborees, including the 1971 World Jamboree in Japan and three National Jamborees; two of those were with his sons. He made four trips to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. While at Philmont, Joe earned Arrowhead awards each time. Additionally, he completed the Kit Carson Mens Program. His two sons achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.
Westbrook was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of LaGrange, where he served as a Deacon. He was a member of the LaGrange Lions Club for 35 years serving in various positions, including President. His favorite Lion’s Club event was the annual Election Day BBQ where he could always be found cooking all night. He enjoyed time on the lake, camping, and attending events featuring his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of almost 50 years, Janice Westbrook; twin sisters Emily Jordan (Collier), Ellen Avery (Darrald, deceased); sons Adam (Kandy), Timothy (Shirley); daughter Katie Trent (Blake); grandchildren Tanner, Tyler Kate, Tucker, Tatum, McCoy, Harry, as well as many dear nieces and nephews.
