

Mr. Daniel was born on August 10, 1925 in LaGrange, Georgia, graduated from LaGrange High School and received a degree in civil engineering from The Georgia Institute of Technology, where he played defensive end and tight end on the football team and played in the Sugar Bowl and the Orange Bowl. While at Georgia Tech, Mr. Daniel was a member of ANAK, ODK, president of Phi Delta Theta, president of the student body and president of his senior class. Following graduation, Mr. Daniel served as a Lieutenant in the Navy in World War II and the Korean War.
After military service, Mr. Daniel worked at Daniel Lumber and Construction Company beginning in 1950. He served as President and General Manager of the company from 1970 to 1996 and Chairman of the Board until retirement a few years ago. Projects completed by Mr. Daniel include The First Baptist Church Family Life Center, the LaGrange College Student Center, the Enoch Callaway Cancer Clinic, Hospice LaGrange and the Humane Society Animal Shelter.
Mr. Daniel served as Treasurer and President of the LaGrange Lions Club, where he earned the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the highest honor a member can achieve. He served as a Board Member of the LaGrange Chamber of Commerce, Director of Commercial Bank and Trust Company, Trustee of West Georgia Medical Center, Trustee of LaGrange College and Chairman of the Deacons of The First Baptist Church. He was also a long-time member of Highland Country Club, having joined in 1948.
Mr. Daniel loved all sports and played tennis well into his seventies. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who loved his family, his church, his work and his Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. He was a good friend to everyone he knew and to anyone who needed a friend. He will be sorely missed.
Mr. Daniel was preceeded in death by his parents, Geraldine and Tom Daniel, his first wife, Ellen Tatum Daniel, five brothers and one sister. In addition to his wife, Sarah Rogers Daniel, he leaves two children, Ned Daniel and wife Beth of LaGrange, and Sally Maloof and husband Mike of Atlanta; four step-children, Nancy Snoots and husband Barry of Waverly Hall, John Giannini of Atlanta, Bob Giannini and wife Mary of Lilburn, Tom Giannini and wife Marchelle of Baltimore, Maryland; fourteen grandchildren: Jeannie, Laura, and Joseph Daniel; Tatum and Michael Maloof; Sarah, David, and John Johannaber; Jack, Emily, Will, Maggie, Alex and Angelina Giannini; his sister-in-law Sally Kehoe and husband Billy of Savannah; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at the First Baptist Church on the Square with Dr. Paul R. Baxter and Rev. Paul Blair officiating. The family will gather to receive friends in the Welcome Center of the church immediately following the service. A private burial will be held in Hillview East Cemetery.
