He was born on July 5, 1983 in Americus, Ga. Baptized in the Episcopal Church as a baby, Matt was later baptized again at the age of 9 when he walked to the altar at Morningside Baptist Church to profess his faith in Christ. As a child, Matt was a record setting competitive swimmer, talented horseman, enjoyed the outdoors, scouting, fishing, and antagonizing his little sister. Throughout his childhood, his favorite pastime was fishing with his grandfather, Clifton, at Lake Blackshear. He was good at pretty much everything: academics, sports, gaming, and of course knowing the best way to do things. Despite giving his parents several gray hairs and Matt’s strong will often getting him into trouble, it also helped him to stand firm whenever he faced challenges and gave him a strong work ethic and unmatched determination to be the best at everything he did. Little did he know, he would meet his match, when he met his soulmate, Anna.
He was a single dad, raising his son Michael, with the help of his parents, Mark and Cathy Scott. With his quick wit and charming yet mischievous grin, he tricked Anna with all that charm and they were together for 5 years before marrying in 2016. Together, they had their son, Austin, who inherited the best characteristics of them both. Matt loved and was so proud of both his sons, and they shared his love of the outdoors, fishing, and gaming. Matt’s soft side was reserved for his family: his wife Anna, his sons, and especially for his beloved cat, Spaz, and dog, Hershey.
Matthew was a graduate of Harris County High School and as an adult, was a skilled builder, a master carpenter, and a licensed HVAC technician. He was dependable, hard-working, and would even volunteer his skills for family and friends when needed. Matt believed in giving a hand up to anyone he could in their career and many of his friends made a point to tell his parents, Mark and Cathy, that they owed their career or good job to Matt.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Clifton and Josephine Scott, John and Jeanette Goodrum, and his grandfather-in-law, Ernest Clemens. Matthew is survived by his loving wife, Anna Marie Scott; his sons, Michael Cliffton Scott and Austin James Scott; parents, Mark and Catherine Scott; sister, Jessica Bounds and husband, Adam; grandmother, Teresa Goodrum; mother-in-law, Regina Clemens; grandmother-in-law, Shirley Clemens; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A celebration of life memorial service for Matthew will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 26, 2025 with visitation at 1:00 PM at Church on the Trail, 6200 Macon Rd., Columbus, Georgia.
