
Mrs. Cox was born August 23, 1916 in Troup County, near Antioch, daughter of the late Benjamin Henry Whatley and Sallie Fannie Smith Whatley. She was a graduate of LaGrange High School. Mildred was a long-time employee of Callaway Mills and later Barwick Industries and finally Troup County Senior Center. She was a member of the First Baptist Church on the Square.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elie Ray Cox; a sister Irene Whatley Winn; and two brothers, B. H. Whatley, Jr. and Wilbur Whatley.
Survivors include her nieces Elaine Winn Hiatt and Julie Pike; nephews, Tommy (Gail) Whatley, Mike (Suellen) Whatley, Norman (Erika) Cox, and Charles Brown; great-nieces, Angel Whatley, Allie Whatley, and Missy Cumberland; great-nephews, Fred Hiatt, Jr., Wesley Hiatt, Greg Hiatt, Benjamin Whatley, Lucas Whatley, Matthew Whatley, and Jim Cox; and great-great-nephews, Justin Hiatt and Josh Hiatt.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with Dr. Paul R. Baxter officiating. Burial will follow in Shadowlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour.
