

Ava Jo Almand Hazel McBride, 88, passed away peacefully June 7, 2014, in her residence. She was born February 2, 1926 in Grand Bayou in Webster Parish, to Ava Conly Almand and Adolphus Carroll Almand.
She graduated as valedictorian from Doyline High School and later obtained her nursing license. She retired from the Calcasieu Parish Health Center as supervisor of nurses in 1986 and worked in other nursing positions prior to her career in public health.
She was a member of Sale Street Baptist Church, the Quota Club and the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
She is predeceased by her parents, her husbands, James C. Hazel Jr. and Charles R. McBride Jr., and her sister Carolyn Elkins.
She is survived by her children, Carolyn S. Hazel McConathy and husband Larry, Peggy J. Hazel Dees and husband Michael, and Clifford C. Hazel; her grandchildren Allison A. Dees, John M. Dees and wife Ashley, Thomas E. McConathy, and J. Patrick McConathy; her great-grandson Oliver A. O’Grady; her sister, Mary F. Kirkley; and her step-sons Charles R. McBride III and Clyde W. McBride.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, June, 11, from 9:00 am until the start of service at 10:30 am at Hixson Funeral Home in Lake Charles. The Reverend Randy Edwards will officiate.
