

She was born on February 29, 1940, in Lake Charles to Estelle Rush Hebert and Melvin Hebert. In the 1960’s she graduated from McNeese State University with a degree in education. She went back to college in the early 1980’s and earned a degree in accounting. She was an AARP tax aide for 25 years and served as secretary –treasurer statewide. She was a member of the Louisiana Engineering Society Auxiliary. She was a founding member of Fairview United Methodist Church, where she was a vital part of church life. She taught Sunday school and Bible school, was a member of the United Methodist Women, held numerous offices and served as the church’s treasurer for more than 20 years. She was a talented seamstress and did beautiful needlework.
She and her husband were married for 56 years. Their marriage was a model of commitment and companionship built on faith in God and each other. She was generous to a fault, unconditionally accepting of others and an attentive listener.
She is survived by her husband, James “Jim” Benoit; children, Ellen DeWitt and husband David of Moss Bluff; Tommy Benoit and wife Aleta of Moss Bluff; Joan Benoit and husband Stephen Atkinson of Katy, TX; Mary Benoit of Iota; sister, Cathy Lawson and husband Dennis of Sulphur; six grandchildren, Jeanette DeWitt-Kyle and husband Trevor, Emily DeWitt and Katie DeWitt of Lake Charles; Steven DeWitt and fiancée Brianna Jackson of Sidney, NE; Brandon Benoit of Moss Bluff; Ellen Atkinson of Katy, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Jane Self and brother, Gary Hebert.
Her funeral will be 2:00pm, Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at Hixson Funeral Home in Lake Charles. Her son-in-law, the Rev. Dr. David DeWitt and nephew, Drew Mills will officiate. Visitation will be 5:00pm until 7:30pm Tuesday and resume Wednesday from 12 noon until time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Prien Memorial Park Cemetery.
