Hi, my name is Martha and for the last year and a half or so I've visited Dolores a couple of times a week.  We struck up a friendship almost by accident: another friend of mine, a former neighbor named Ora, lived down the hall from Dolores.  One day Ora was busy when I arrived, so I meandered along and caught up with Dolores, who was getting her daily exercise by hall-walking.  I mentioned that she should walk outside, as it was a glorious day. Dolores told me that she couldn't go out: she was afraid she would fall because she was losing her sight.  I reassured her that I wouldn't let her fall, and she thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors that day.  In our conversation I learned that she used to enjoy reading, but glaucoma had stolen that pleasure from her.  After that, I started collecting stories to read to her, and we'd share our own stories (and our mutual love of chocolate) with each other, week after week. 

I'm sure her family knows, but it bears mentioning, that Dolores LOVED being a mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother.  She was proud of her children (and insistent that they were GOOD children, and that she never had any trouble with them),  Although she and her husband Joe were not wealthy, they had a good life together, and he was a good man.  And as shy and private as she was, she did have a romantic, sensual streak in her.  (I read her a story once about a young man who had the reputation of touching women a lot "in certain ways".  I asked what she would do if she were with a man who did that... would she make him stop?  And she said, "Not if I LIKED it!")

I was ever-so-glad to spend time with Dolores, and very fortunate that on her last day at College Walk, another friend took a photo of the 2 of us together, both wearing purple (her favorite color).  When they put her on the stretcher to take her to Elizabeth House, I hugged her and kissed her goodbye.  I'll miss her and always be glad to have known her.
