Year,1988. You were less than 2 yrs old when I sa you for the first time.  I usually told people that Martene was  my daughter.  Looking at all those family pictures bring back so much memories.  Good ones.
My last text to you was April 15,2020,you didn't reply which was unusual.   I missed our little chat. You were  such a beautiful soul inside and out. I will always remember your beautiful smile.   You're free now  to continue your travels.  No passport needed,no plane tickets,no sickness nothing can stop you.   
You will be missed deeply Ma Mé.

My heart hurts to hear that such a sweet spirit has left this earth. I will always remember your smile and  passion to see the world and live life on your terms. Funny enough, Martine introduced me to Instagram so I could follow her adventures and keep in contact with her. Sleep in peace my friend.

Martene's life on earth may have been short but her light will remain here forever! My fondest memories of Martene were summer breaks I spent with my godmother, Fifi, Martene's mom in Miami!  Back then, Martene was sassy, mischevious, rebellious and was always getting into something.  I knew that everyday with Martene something interesting was bound to go down; like when Martene prank call the police to report a non existent crime!  Although Martene was a no limit soldier back then, she was always kind and gracious to me and eager to show her godsister/cousin from the Bahamas life in the 305! She also had a deep love for food! Every few mins her mouth was moving or she was looking for a snack.  Martene's progression into adulthood was inspirational!  She became calm, determined, and a role model! She lived full, she accomplished her goals, travelled, shared her gifts, she loved people and had a deep sense of compassion! I recall her telling me that she turned vegan after watching a video of animals being slaughtered and her heart could no longer allow her to eat them. I was moved and could not believe this was the Martene that loved to eat so much!  But her love was selfless! Rest in peace Martene and my condolences to Goddy Fifi and Felicia!

Shirley and Shirley’s night on the town was the name for our meet-ups. Martene even visited me when I moved from the U.S. to Barcelona, Spain. She also was the catalyst for my plans to complete my Masters’ and doing it abroad…You will be missed, my dear friend.

Martene and I always enjoyed each others company; sharing our world views and plans for travel. She had such a vibrant personality. Every word she vocalized, she meant from the heart.

My condolences to the family! Martene I will always remember and cherish the moments we had ,  You were truly a great friend! May you rest in peace, God has you now and will take care of you. Love you always.

Martene was the most beautiful woman inside and out. I remember when I got here in USA, she was my first English teacher. The first place she showed me was the public library just to let you know how much she loved education. She was smart, courageous, and a very reserved person. She will always be missed.

The beautiful and funny moments we shared will stay with me forever. You were always such an amazing person. You treated me so well—like I was your own child, even though I was your godsister.

I still can’t fathom everything because I’ve been hoping to see you heal, speak again, and post about a new country traveled. So many memories of the Swap shop days, the C-store, sitting on the swing bed at your mom’s house, our rank sessions, and our school rivalries. We miss you dearly Martene and ask that God gives us all  strength to bear the heavy burden, as we cast our anxieties unto Jesus.

Sending love and thoughts to Martene and her family. Martene and I met at UCF in a microeconomics course when she simply decided we would be friends. She quickly became a bright part of our lives and home. She was such a positive force for me as well as my family, often coming over just to hang out.

Her kindness and understanding was unmatched. She often accompanied me on errands simply because we enjoyed being in each others' company so much; having her along for even the mundane things made it that much better. When it was time to plan my wedding, it was obvious I wanted her to be involved. 

Since our college time, I have appreciated seeing her travels and continued exuberance for life. She is truly a spirited adventurer, something I always admired her for. Rest well, my friend. Your light is deeply missed.

I am so thankful to have known Martene. Although I only knew her for a short time, her personality was unmatched. She was so kind. Her students talked on and on about how fun she was as a teacher. I am so sorry to hear of her passing but I know she won’t be forgotten. I am thinking of her mom and family and sending my love.💜

My prayers are with Martene’s family. I knew her for a short time in college at UCF in Orlando, she was my significant other’s friend and classmate.

Martene had a smile and exuberance that could brighten the cloudiest day. And she was a kind friend. She offered to babysit our toddler so we could manage our schedule through finals week and when we got back she had cleaned the whole place up as well.  An amazing act of friendship for busy toddler parents/college students.

And her laugh! I told her if I ever did an open mic night at a comedy club, I would want her front and center. 

I’m so sorry her life ended so early and sorry for her family and friends to lose such a wonderful person.

I hope her soul is at peace.

I met Martene when she was 16 years old and two things she was quick to let me know, she ain't scared and she ain't no punk.  She let me know in no uncertain terms she didn't care who I was or thought I was, this here was 305! I Through connection of knowing her through her older sister Felicia, I was able to keep tabs and updates on her as time went on. Almost 12 years later I was able she her as an adult. Her transformation and growth was incredible. Martene literally owed the world on own terms. World travelled, multi-lingual, fashionably elite.  The most beatiful thing about hernwas while everything changed on the outside, nothing changed on the inside. She still wasn't scared and still wasn't no punk. She let me know in German...it was still 305. I will miss her energy and love of life and love of her family. Rest eternally in peace Martene. I will remember you forever.

19 November 2017 we met in Barcelona - Spain. Just two black girls walking down the street of Barcelona, looking for a vegan bar to have dinner.  

As there a not many black girls in Barcelona we started talking immediately.  We instantly had a connection, so many similarities! We laughed, shared a meal and took this photo.  It was a lovely day! Till this day, I look back how you have inspired me to travel the world and to dream big!
