Fred Stevens of Northport, NE, died peacefully in his home with family by his
side on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at 77 years of age. Following an extended battle with several
life threatening diseases, Wayne left this world in his own distinguished way.
Cremation
has taken place and a private service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be sent to his family. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.bbchapels.com. Bridgeport Memorial Chapel assisted the family
with arrangements.
Wayne
was born January 28, 1936 to Fred and Nellie Emma (Schuler) Stevens at the
family farm near Broadwater, NE. Wayne received
his early education through the 8th grade at the Kelly School west
of Broadwater and continued his 9th thru 11th grades at
Bridgeport High School.
Wayne
was inducted in to the Army Reserves and served with the H/H Det, 424 Ord Btn,
Sidney, Nebraska from August 1956 until his Honorable discharge in January
1963.
On
Friday, January 13, 1956, he wed the love of his life, Nancy Ann Muhr, in
Harrisburg at the Banner County Courthouse. (They both remembered the mouse
nest in the corner!) They made their home in Bridgeport. As their love grew, so
did the family beginning with Bradly Quinn Stevens, Brookings, SD, Crystal Lynn
(Jerry) Smith, Brownwood, TX, Cheryl Jean Stevens (Michael Hays), Papillion,
NE, Melody Ann (Todd) Franklin, Bridgeport, NE, and Melinda Lea Stevens
(Roland) Peters, Northport, NE and daughter-in-law Gale Stevens, Cheyenne, WY.
Wayne
had been a member of The Panhandle Coon Hunters Association, A Leader of the
Boys Scouts of America and a member of the NE Pork Producers.
He
loved coyote hunting with greyhounds and coon hunting with Blue-Tick and Black
and Tan hounds, as well as fishing and occasional trips to the goose blind for
marshmallows. He enjoyed spending time
with friends and family, camping and teaching the youngsters with 30 minute
explanations for what would be a yes or no question. Later in life, he reached his goal of self-employment
and became a pork producer! He worked harder than he ever had before and loved
every minute. Porky as he was known could put on one heck of a hog roast for
the whole neighborhood!!! He put 23
years into developing some of the best pork available in the western Nebraska
area prior to his retiring in 2000. He
also developed a slew of young people into the good natured way of working on a
hog farm. Before that he worked as a serviceman for Kansas Nebraska Gas Company
and for the Compressor station, Panhandle Coop Service Station for many years
and several other local service stations, as well as a farm hand for many local
farmers.
