9/23/1923 ~ 3/15/2019
Marjorie Jean Robinson, a 40-year resident of Boulder, Colorado passed away March 15, 2019 at Sunrise Assisted Living, Pinehurst in Denver, with her family by her side. She was 95.
Born August 23, 1923 to Otto and Bertha Strobel in a farmhouse in North Adams, Michigan, Marj grew up in Whittier, California with her parents and older brother Otto Jr. She lost her father, a tool and dye maker, when she was sixteen.
Marj received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Whittier College in 1945 and taught third grade for several years. She also served as a property manager for an apartment partnership in Boulder for five years and she worked as a secretary after earning a vocational certificate from Boulder Valley Vocational Technical Center in 1982.
She was an accomplished seamstress and made many of her own and her daughter’s clothes. Later she became an enthusiastic quilter.
Marj volunteered throughout her life as well. She worked with her daughter’s schools and brownie troop, the Red Cross, United Way and the Boulder Valley School District.
Marj met the first and only love of her life, Jim Robinson, at age sixteen and they married in May, 1945, both twenty-one years old just as World War II was ending. They lived in Whittier, California, Ridgewood, New Jersey, Boulder, Colorado and finally Denver. They loved nature, camping, traveling and were longtime members of the Denver Botanic Gardens and the Rocky Mountain Bonsai Society. They also square danced with the Boulder Rhythm Reelers. After selling their north Boulder home, they lived at the Boulder Meridian community for five years before moving to Sunrise Pinehurst in 2010. Jim passed away with Alzheimer’s in 2013. They were married for almost 68 years and had quite a love story.
Marj loved the simple pleasures of life; laughing, good friends, family, her beloved dogs, picnics, fast food, DQ and napping in a sunny spot. She was a self-described chocoholic and relished every bite. She enjoyed many activities at Sunrise and had a wonderful sense of humor and a gap-toothed smile that could light up a room.
She is survived by her daughter, Sue Robinson, son-in-law Dave Steinke and her granddaughter Erin Robinson Steinke, all of whom live in the Denver area, and who shared lots of good times with Marj, especially in her later years. She is also survived by her brother Otto and beloved nieces, nephews and cousins in California, Washington, Michigan and Colorado.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Suncrest Hospice of Denver.
A memorial service will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery, on Friday, April 12th at 3:00 pm at Staging Area “A”
