Denver, Colorado
Samuel David Gonzales “Sammy D”, age 63 of Denver Colorado entered eternity on Sunday, April 27, 2025. He was born on June 25, 1961, in Denver Colorado, to his loving parents, Rubel and Mary Gonzales.
Sammy was preceded in death by his father Rubel Gonzales, his mother Mary E. Gonzales, his sister
Paulina Mendoza and his nephew Gabriel Gonzales. Sammy is survived by his brothers and sisters Liz & Mike Salazar, Ray & Diane Gonzales, June & Larry Herrera, Moses & Beth Gonzales, Becky & Rich Fredriksz, John Mendoza; 17 nephews and nieces; 18 great nephews and nieces; a large extended family; and numerous friends (many who called him Uncle Sam)
Sammy was born with Down’s Syndrome, and those who didn’t know him considered this a disability. However, to family, friends, and the neighborhood kids, Sammy was just one of the “gang”. He rode his bike, he played ball in the street, and he even had his share of scuffles. Sammy graduated from Denver
West High School in 1981 with a certificate of attendance. He was so happy as he participated in Commencement Exercises wearing his cap and gown. Sammy loved to listen to music. He had stacks of CDs of his favorite artists. Sammy had so much fun taking pictures on Snap Chat with his nieces. He loved being silly. Sammy brought so much joy to all who knew him, he was loved and treasured, and he will be greatly missed.
We would like to thank Sammy’s PCP, Steven Kolpak for the care he provided him for over 20 years, and the support he gave to our family. We want to also thank the staff of Brighton Hospice who took such good care of him in his final days. They don’t know this, but our family would like to thank Becky and Rich for taking care of Sammy over the last seven years. They provided for all his needs and wants. They have included him in everything they did.
Family and friends are invited to join us for Sammy’s Celebration of Life on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at 9 am. It will be held at New Hope Ministries, 875 South Sheridan Blvd. Internment to follow at Ft. Logan National Cemetery.
