

Dietrich was a resident of Lakewood, New Jersey.
Dietrich(Dieter) Marcuse was born on February 27, 1929 in Konigsberg, East Prussia, Germany. After graduating in 1954 from the Freie Universitat (Free University) of Berlin with a degree of Diplom Physiker (physicist with a masters degree), he also received a doctor of engineerng degree from the University of Karlsruhe in Germany. He worked for three years at the Central Laboratory of Siemens in Berlin.
In 1957 Dieter immigrated to the United States where he found employment in the research department of Bell Telephone Laboratories. He conducted research on optical fiber communications.
In January 1959 he married Haide Schwarz. The couple raised two children, Christina and Mikel and lived at various locations in New Jersey, interrupted by a one year stay (1966-1967) in Salt Lake City where Dieter taught as a visiting professor at the Electrical Engineering Department of the University of Utah. While there, he wrote the manuscript for his first book which later was followed by three more technical text books on the subjects of quantum theory and light transmission.
After his retirement from Bell Labs in 1994 he worked for 9 more years as a consultant for several companies and as an adjunct professor at the Unoversity of Maryland.
He is a fellow of IEEE (the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) of the OSA (the Optical Society of America), the recipient of the Quantum Electronics Award of IEEE and of the Max Born Award of OSA.
He is survived by his wife Haide and by his childeren Christina and Mikel.
