Elizabeth T. Koerner

Betty was born in Kearney, NJ, to Elizabeth and Elmer B. Torrance, on August 25, 1934. Raised in Kearney with her sister Elma Jean, the family moved to Manasquan, where Betty attended Manasquan High School, Class of 1952. Betty graduated from the Ann May School of Nursing, Class of 1955, where she specialized in Obstetrics. In 1956, Betty flew to Honolulu, Hawaii, to marry Richard A. Koerner, who was serving with the U.S. Army, 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks. The young couple loved their life in Hawaii, and after Rich’s discharge, returned to NJ where she worked as a private practice nurse, while he attended Rutgers Law School.

Betty and Rich settled their growing family in Hillsborough, NJ, where they were active community members for 35 years. Women’s club, PTA, Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout Leader, Band Booster and Little League Team Mom; Betty never missed a concert, a ball game or a half time show.

Betty was an avid reader, an accomplished bridge player, a great jitterbug dancer, who spent many joyous winter weekends skiing the slopes of Vermont, and summer weekends swimming at the Jersey

Shore.

Retiring to the Lake Ridge Community, Toms River in 1997, Betty and Rich continued their love of travel by exploring the world, with Paris and Hawaii being their favorite destinations. Married for 56

years, Betty moved to Harrogate after Rich’s passing in 2012. The active Harrogate community and staff brought her lasting friendship and joy, and at the end, loving care and comfort.

She is adored and missed by her children Allison (Mark) Neary of Pennington, Gretchen (Michael Harrity) Koerner of Ventnor City, and Andrew Torrance (Josianne) Koerner of Bridgewater, VT, and her grandchildren Frederick Koerner (Melanie Gertz) Neary, Elizabeth Ann (Mac Blessen) Neary, Matthew Joseph (Liana Wait) Koerner and Alexis (Jordan Hill) Koerner, and her great-grand daughter Elizabeth Wren Neary.
