Michael R. Cloney

Michael R. (Pop-Pop) Cloney, 85, Lakewood passed away February 6 peacefully at home. Born and raised in New York, he graduated from St. Francis College. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and served 4 years and was the recipient of two Purple Hearts for his service during the Korean War. Mike was Executive Director of Junior Achievement in Rhode Island, Manager of Member Relations at National Association of Accountants in New York City, and owner of Penn Michael Management in New Jersey till his retirement in 1988. One of his happiest moments was marrying the love of his life, the former Dorothy Taber. They had a love like no other and together, they had a beautiful life raising their children and traveling the world till she passed away in 2007. Mike was very active in various Veteran organizations. He enjoyed sharing stories of times past with just about anyone who cared to listen. He was an avid NY Giants fan, which wasn't easy since most of his family members weren't. He was a well-spoken man who loved to read, watch movies, and spend time with his family and friends. Pop-Pop will be missed more than he could ever know. In addition to his beloved Dorothy, Mike was predeceased by his parents, John and Ellen (Bailey) Cloney, and his 2 sons, Kevin and Robert Cloney. He is survived by his devoted children; daughter Diane Szewczyk, and her husband Walter, Lakewood; and son Brian, and his wife Cathy, Wall, his sister Helen Sigismondi, Blackwood; his grandchildren, Karen Isnardi and husband John, Toms River; Laurie Okaly and husband Paul, Manchester; Stacey Ago and husband Alvin, Middlesex; Patrick, Travis and Nolan Cloney, Wall; and seven great-grandchildren, Kayci, Kassidy, Sean, Brianna, Aiden, Caleigh and Anderson, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Visiting hours will be 4-8 pm on Tuesday, and a Service will be held on Wednesday at 11am at D'Elia Funeral Home, Route 70 , Lakewood. Cremation will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to The Wounded Warrior Project.
