Patrick Mayfield, lovingly known as “Pat” or “Butch”, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2024 after a courageous battle with cancer. Pat met his beloved wife, Arline, also known as “Sugar”, at a candy store when they were teenagers and their love lasted 64 years until her death in March 2019. He is survived by his daughters Patricia (her husband Mark), of Marlborough, MA, Helen (her husband James, who predeceased him) and his daughter-in-law, Anita (her husband, Robert, who predeceased him). He is also survived by his four beloved grandchildren: Nicole, Ryan, Zachary and Elise, whom he loved deeply and cherished every moment he spent with them. He instilled in them the importance of hard work, kindness, resilience and living life to the fullest.
Patrick, was born and raised in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City. Born to Elizabeth and Patrick including six siblings, four who predeceased him. He will join his parents along with his “Sissy” Joan, and brothers Thomas, James, and Donald. He is survived by his youngest brother, George and his wife, Linda. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In 1962, Pat and Arline moved from New York City to the small lake community of Hopatcong, where they bought their first home. For 40 years he commuted and worked tirelessly at his business, Mayfield Auto Body in Yonkers, NY. He had a passion for cars in business and in pleasure. He owned and restored the likes of Corvettes, Firebird Trans-Am, Cadillacs, SS Chevy Camaros, and more.
Pat embraced the Hopatcong Lake Community. He volunteered often with the Hopatcong Little League where he would develop lifelong friendships. He enjoyed and embraced all things outdoors. If it was winter he was often found ice skating, skiing or hunting. If it was summer, he would be at the lake or the ocean, enjoying water skiing, fishing, crabbing, bike riding and body surfing. He also enjoyed his boat, his wave runners, four-wheelers and go-karts.
As Pat transitioned into retirement with his wife, Arline, he moved to Toms River where he spent weekends in his pool or at the beach in Lavalette with family and friends. His eventual move to Eagle Ridge in Lakewood, NJ, with his wife Arline, would bring many years of laughter, love, friendship and the spirit of adventure. He embraced many of the club activities the Eagle Ridge community had to offer. He played cards regularly with his buddies, as well as tennis, softball, pool and bocce.
As Pat’s health limitations slowed him down, he adapted his adventurous lifestyle. He purchased the ultimate ride, a scooter, that would take him to year number 90, a goal he often talked about. His scooter took him to various ocean side towns where he would ride up and down the “Boards.” Pat would often visit his favorite NJ shore spots where he never passed up a cup of coffee, and a Chinese Almond cookie with the dabble of chocolate on the top. He enjoyed sitting by the ocean on a pier or in the car, always in a sunny spot listening to the ocean, reading his latest book and of course taking a nap. He attended various shows at the Algonquin theatre, trips to Atlantic City, and enjoyed cruises on the Seastreak Ferry traveling along the Hudson River.
Pat’s warmth, kindness, and infectious laugh will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of love and spirit of adventure will continue to inspire those he touched during his long and happy life.
A memorial visitation will be held from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on January 12, 2025, at the D'Elia Funeral Home, 1300 Vermont Avenue, Lakewood, NJ 08701.
