February 14, 1939-December 24, 2022
Our beloved Mother, Susan Shapiro, 83, of Waretown, NJ, passed away on Saturday, December 24, 2022. She is survived by her devoted husband Aaron Shapiro of Waretown, NJ, who loved her and took care of her for 62 years; her daughters, Lori Shapiro and her husband, Cary Goldenthal, of Marietta, GA, and Stephanie Sabin and her husband, David Sabin, of Edison, NJ; her sister, Ellen Legow and her husband Donald Legow of Livingston, NJ; her sister-in-law Maxine Shapiro of Boynton Beach, FL; and many nieces and nephews. She was known as “Grandma,” her favorite title, to her adoring grandchildren, Benjamin and Sarah Goldenthal, and Danielle Sabin, on whom she showered unending love and affection.
Susan was the daughter of the late Samuel Kanowith and Anne Blick Kanowith of Elizabeth, New Jersey, where she grew up. Susan married Aaron in 1961 after graduating from Douglas College. Although they moved around a bit, they mainly raised their two daughters in East Brunswick, NJ.
Susan taught 1st grade in Scotch Plains, NJ for three years and then in Plainfield, NJ for 22 years. Her students can attest to her dedication and commitment to them. She loved playing volleyball at Mirror Lake Swim Club in the summers with Aaron. After she retired from teaching, Susan and Aaron moved to Waretown, NJ, where she taught many of her friends how to play Mah Jong and they became an integral part of the community. In retirement, she and Aaron went on many trips, especially enjoying the one to Israel.
Words cannot express how important Susan was to our family – she was a constant and loving presence no matter how near or far we were, never missed a chance to visit with us or attend a performance, share an occasion or celebrate a birthday. She was our biggest cheerleader at all times, and always encouraged us to follow our dreams. She was our refuge in any storm, supporting us and loving us. She laughed with us and taught us how to love and be loved.
