Remembering Bubber. On January 25, 1933 in League City, Texas, the Lord blessed the union of Jeff Mathews, Sr. and Mary M. Hobbs Mathews with a son whom they lovingly named, Carl Edward Mathews. He was the second of four children (first son) born to this union. At an early age, Bubber as he was known by all, accepted Christ. He united with Zion Hill Baptist Church in La Porte under the leadership of the late Rev. Shorts and was baptized in the roadside pond. He was educated in the elementary schools of LaPorte, Texas and after the family moved to League City, he later attended Dunbar Jr. High School and High School where he graduated in 1943. He was also a member of Winfield Chapel Methodist Church. After graduation, Bubber enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served a four year tour of duty and traveled overseas during his tour. On February 13, 1962, Bubber married the love of his life, Sharon Hawthorne in Texas City by Rev. Dr. D. N. Benford, Sr. This union of love was blessed with one son, Tony A. Mathews. Bubber was employed with Union Carbide Corporation in Texas City as an Operator. He gave 28 years of dedicated service before his retirement in 1998. Bubber and Sharon united with McKinney Memorial Methodist Church under the pastoral leadership of the late Rev. T. L. Long. Bubber had the greatest GREEN THUMB that ever was. He was known for his love of gardening and could always be found in the yard with his Collard Green, Cucumbers, Watermelons, Peppers, you name it, he grew it and grew it well. He was always known for his beautiful yard. Even though his body had been through so much, he never quit. He would get out the hospital and be right back in his yard. Early morning, mid day, late evening, he could always find something to do. On Friday, October 4, 2013, God granted Bubber his eternal rest. He is preceded in death by his mother, Mary M.
