On July 12, 1947, a beautiful baby girl was born to a blessed couple, Mr. Simpson Newsome Sr. and his beloved wife, Mrs. Annie Lee Ferguson Newsome in Brenham, Texas. They named their blessing from God, Grace Patricia Newsome. The family later increased with the birth of one sister, Hortynse and four brothers, Joe, David, James (Jerry) and Simpson Jr. Having grown up in the Texas City/LaMarque community, Grace attended the local public schools and was a proud graduate of Lincoln High School Class of 1965. She went on to further her education by graduating from Prairie View A&M University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1969; and received her Masters of Education in 1973. Grace began her life’s work, a career in Teaching which spanned 37 years beginning with Brenham ISD (15 years), La Marque ISD (10 years) and finally Texas City ISD (12 years) after which she retired. Jesus said in Matthew 20:27, “And whoever would be chief among you let him be your servant.” Webster defines servant as a person devoted to any “service.” That word alone is the summation of Grace’s life. She loved children and enjoyed encouraging and motivating them to excel in school. Grace was deeply devoted to her family. She grew up in the love and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ and was a devoted member of McKinney Memorial United Methodist Church in La Marque where she served diligently as a profound Alto in the Chancel Choir and Sanctuary Choir. Her glorious voice could also be heard in the musical group known as “Treble Clef” Grace also served the church in whatever capacity she could. Her beautiful smile and quiet manor will be missed by those who knew and loved her. She was also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Although her absence is difficult for us to bear, we trust God’s work for love lingers and we will meet again. Those awaiting her heavenly arrival were her father, Simpson Newsome, Sr.; and brothers, Simpson Newsome, Jr. Joe Simpson and David Simpson. Left to cherish the memories of Grace’s fruitful life are her loving mother, Mrs. Annie Lee Newsome, fondly referred to by Grace as “Miss Ann”; her best friend and sister, Hortynse and her baby brother, Jerry. The love continues through her nieces, Patrice, Danielle and Donna; nepohe, David Smith; great-nieces, Alexia and Amya Newsome; aunts, Tommie Dell Newsome, Lucille Newsome; uncles, Luen Newsome and William (Doris) Howard; and numerous cousins, relatives, co-workers, students, her McKinney Church Family and many friends.
