Barry was a proud graduate of Cleveland Heights High School and The Ohio State University College of Law. He practiced law in the Columbus area for more than 50 years, earning a reputation not only for his skill, but for his integrity – widely known as an “honest” attorney, a distinction he carried with quiet pride.
In 1980, Barry married the love of his life, Kathy Van Gundy, beginning a partnership that spanned over 46 devoted years. Their marriage was filled with laughter, loyalty, and shared traditions—including Kathy’s prenuptial agreement that she become a Cleveland Browns fan, a role she embraced wholeheartedly, adopting the hopeful refrain, “maybe next year.”
Together, Barry and Kathy found joy in hiking and camping throughout the national parks, creating cherished memories in the beauty of the outdoors. Barry was also an avid golfer and a familiar presence at both Lancaster Country Club and Lancaster Golf Club.
Barry is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy Waller, of Lancaster; his brother, Bruce J. Waller of Cleveland; his brother-in-law, David Van Gundy of Lancaster; his sister-in-law, Betsy Honigman of Jacksonville; as well as several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind two faithful companions, Tara the Labrador and Socks the Cat, who were never far from his side.
In 1997, Barry and Kathy moved to Lancaster to care for Kathy’s mother. In doing so, Barry earned what many affectionately considered “sainthood” status for his kindness, patience, and unwavering support.
Barry and Kathy were grateful for the many dear friendships they built over the years, first in Columbus and later in Lancaster, where they found a true sense of community.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lancaster Festival or the AHA Children’s Museum.
Barry will be remembered for his steady character, gentle humor, deep devotion to those he loved, and a life well lived with integrity and heart.
