Darrell was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Stella Chapman. He is survived by his son, Adam and his special friends Andrea and Lawrence, Jenna and Jesse, Shawn and Kirsten, Carl, and Sharon.
Darrell was born on October 2nd, 1959, in Vancouver, BC. This was his stomping grounds for the majority of his childhood. Darrell grew up with his sister, Joanne Holtz and brother Bobby Chapman. Darrell expressed that one of the best parts of his childhood was the memory of his mom seeing the good in everything and everyone.
Darrell found love, not once, but twice. His second marriage blessed him with the greatest gift of all, his son Adam, whom he loved very much. As terrified as he was at becoming a dad, it was the greatest joy he felt.
Darrell walked in his dad’s footsteps and became a truck driver. He loved driving trucks! Darrell was also a foodie, and one of the foods he most enjoyed was a good pizza! Darrell was so in love with pizza that he opened his own pizza place, Murrayville Pizza, from 2002 until 2005. He loved his customers and loved making them happy with his pizza! Darrell had many hobbies. He loved pulling pranks and making people laugh. He collected loud, ugly Hawaiian shirts; he would always say, “The louder, the uglier the better,” and he also enjoyed collecting Tim Hortons memorabilia.
Not everything in life goes as planned, and Darrell battled alcoholism. To help overcome his addiction, he made the courageous decision to seek support and attended a treatment program at Wagner Hills Farm. Not only did Darrell confront his addiction, but he also experienced tremendous growth in his faith in God and created lasting friendships. After graduating from his program in 2012, he continued his recovery and participated in The Gateway of Hope Opportunities Program. Most people, once they complete a program, move on. But Darrell refused to leave. He devoted countless hours volunteering for several programs at The Gateway of Hope. Every Christmas season, he was a familiar presence at the Christmas Kettle locations, ringing bells, sharing what The Gateway of Hope had done for him, and encouraging others that help was available for them, too. He loved talking with people.
Instead of flowers, if you would like to donate in Darrell’s name, he would appreciate the donations going to the good work of The Gateway of Hope.
Darrell’s Celebration of Life will be on Thursday, November 27, 2025, at 2:00 PM at The Salvation Army Gateway of Hope in Langley (5787 Langley Bypass).
Please wear a Hawaiian shirt in his honor.
