

Garth suffered a significant stroke on March 7, 2026, and passed away from related complications on March 15, 2026, at the age of 58.
Garth was a beloved father, son, brother, nephew, friend, colleague and mentor and his passing has left us all with an immense sense of loss.
Garth is survived by his two daughters who he absolutely adored, Leila and Keeley, his mom, Bev (David), his brother, Grant (Jean), his Aunt Bonnie (Bill), his very closest friends Justin, Ann Marie, Steph, Silvina and Karen, and his dog, Reece. Garth was predeceased by his dad, Craig (Kate).
After earning his BA and MA locally at Simon Fraser University (SFU), Garth was granted a full academic scholarship and went on to earn his PhD in Criminology from Rutgers University, in Newark, NJ.
Garth was an Associate Professor of Criminology at SFU, the Director of the Canadian Network for Research on Terrorism, Security and Society (CANSES) and was a featured speaker on terrorism, extremism and radicalization at many conferences throughout Canada and the world.
Outside his professional life, Garth enjoyed sports, music, movies, reading, travel, hiking, humour, great conversation and a delicious burger or steak, and let's not forget chocolate!
We will miss him forever.
A Celebration of Garth's life will be held at a later date. As per Garth's wishes, it will be by invitation.
