It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Charlies Nathaniel Irwin, known fondly as Chuck Irwin, on the evening of July 24, 2025. Chuck died peacefully after a short bout of pneumonia, surrounded by the love of his family.
He was predeceased by his second wife, Sandy; stepson Marco; and his brother, Bill. He is survived by his two sisters, Isabelle and Marie; his children, Kathleen, Jim, Anne (her husband Mike), Jennifer, and stepson Eric (his wife Jennifer); and his beloved grandchildren, Lauren, Rhiannon, Nicholas, Katherine, Matthew, Kevin, Gabriella, and Tennyson.
Chuck's life was rich and inspiring. Born on June 3, 1935, in Rossburn, Manitoba, to Maxine and James Irwin, he was a large baby weighing over 11 pounds. His early years were spent in Manitoba before his family moved to Langley, BC, during his adolescence. There, he befriended Bruce Mills, a lifelong friendship. After graduating from Langley Secondary School, he attended the University of British Columbia, studying Engineering Physics. As a member of the ROTP program, he served as a pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force in Baden Baden, Germany, where he met his first wife, Patricia.
In 1961, Chuck returned to British Columbia with Patricia to raise their family and pursue his PhD in Physics at UBC. His career took him to Simon Fraser University, where he dedicated many years as a professor, researcher in high-temperature superconductors, and department chair until his retirement at age 65. Throughout his life, Chuck resided in Burnaby, Coquitlam, and Langley.
A talented and resourceful man, Chuck built his own house, barn, and fences on his Langley property. An active athlete, he played soccer, basketball, and participated in track and field during his youth. Later in life, he developed a passion for golf, enjoying many mornings at Fort Langley Golf Course, often followed by relaxing afternoons.
In 1986, Chuck married Sandy, with whom he shared a joyful life until her passing in 2019. Their winters spent in Phoenix were filled with golf, friendship, and social activities. An avid bridge player and investor, Chuck participated in tournaments and online games regularly, earning Sandy’s playful nickname, "bridge widow."
In his final years, Chuck lived independently at Oceana Parc in White Rock, where he shared many cherished moments with his girlfriend Rita, a dear friend and family addition.
Chuck will be remembered for his strong opinions, engaging debates, and warm smile. His curiosity and zest for life touched all who knew him.
A celebration of his life will be held on November 9th, Sunday from 1230-3 at Northview Golf Course (Address is 6857 168th, Surrey, BC) in the Palmer Room. Please RSVP to [email protected]. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation in his memory.
