Larry Todd Gilchrist (Todd), 58, of Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada passed away at 11:30 am on Friday, May 9th at his home at SFU. He battled Acute Myloid Leukemia for 8 months and succumbed to his illness surrounded by his loving family and close friends.
Todd was born on October 15th in Birtle, Manitoba. He was the son of Donaleen and Larry Gilchrist.
Todd was a Video Journalist for Manitoba Television Network, A-Channel, Now TV, CTV Vancouver, and for Global BC where he devoted his passion of filming news stories and interviewing many people. He captured hockey games, concerts, football games, sad, funny and more serious political stories and was respected and loved by all his Global BC family.
Todd loved and played a high level of basketball and volleyball. He coached many teams, his own children throughout the years, and was involved with the elementary and highschool community. He loved to garden, camp, fish and golf with his brother Mark, Dad, Uncle Frank, Mike and Diane. His most cherished places to be were Ditch Lake (family cabin) in Manitoba as a younger guy and the Marander cabins at Pitt Lake in BC for the last 20 + years. He was nicknamed ‘Hands’ and ‘King’ as he directed everyone how to drive, how to cook and is the best volleyball blocker ever with those large hands. Todd was known for his singing, especially ‘Elvis’ Suspicious Minds and performing on stage. Todd wrote a few songs in his time, lately one called Prairie Town.
Todd was a selfless man, husband and Father who devoted his life to his kids and enjoyed cooking, barbequing, family dinners, gardening, riding bikes, playing with the kids at baseball and soccer, walking the Blossom Way, many Disney movies, playing Mario Kart, reading lots of story books, bed time songs, Montecito Park and Squint Lake Park, singing with his band Aubrey Road, stoking the campfire all night, and being with his family and close friends. He loved our cat Link and taught him dog tricks that the cat actually performed. Todd loved to watch his NBA and MLB on television followed by his old shows.
Remaining to cherish, son Christian, daughter Alessandra and wife Jennifer Gilchrist. Parents, Larry and Donaleen, brother Mark, sister-in-law Diane, sister and brother-in-law Laurie and Andy, nephews Nathan, Curtis, Dillon (Danielle), great nephews Morgan and Marshall, father-in-law Bill, (Predeceased mother-in-law, Mae), brother-in-laws and extended families.
A celebration of life is scheduled for Friday, May 23rd from 4pm onwards at The Slovenian Hall in Burnaby. (Todd style). Todd had such a wonderful and unique idea, to be among the attending at his own celebration of life. He planned it all out, hoping to be there to say goodbye to you all with laughter, drinks, music and songs performed live by his band and him. Although he was not able to make it, we know he is smiling down on us and thankful that his wishes were granted.
