Verna Smith (nee Power) passed away peacefully at Langley Memorial Hospital on February 20, 2011 in her 90th year. Born in Cardiff, Alberta, on June 25, 1921, she was raised in a convent in Edmonton after her mother died. She studied nursing at Edmonton General Hospital and later moved to Vancouver, where she worked as a registered nurse. She married Lou Smith on February 19, 1946 and settled in North Vancouver before moving to Langley in 1960. She was predeceased by her husband Lou in 1969 and by sisters Lil, Gertie, Mable and Pat. She is survived by brother Tom Power (Frances), sister Claire McKenzie (Crawford), son Lorne (Joanne), daughter Teri, grandchildren Steve, Jim, Jennifer and Bob and three great-grandchildren. Prayers will be held Thursday, February 24 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 20676 Fraser Highway, Langley. A funeral Mass was held Friday, February 25 at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph’s. A reception followed in the church hall and burial at Langley Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation.
