Alice Evangeline Throop

Alice is survived by sons, Stewart (Anne), Bradley (Angela) and Philip; her 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren and her sister Mary Lee (Hillman) Carlson. Alice was preceded in death by her parents Beatrice and Leonard Hillman; brother Leonard Hillman Jr.; son, Jeffrey and his wife Elaine and ex-husband, Frank Throop.

Alice will be remembered for her passion to help others and belief in the importance of education. Family was Alice’s foundation. There were all the joys and responsibilities of four sons growing up and starting families of their own. Alice’s life was a cascade of pets, family celebrations, visits up North, gardening, team sports and music - including her own piano playing.

Alice grew up in Ellsworth, (Antrim County) MI, where she graduated valedictorian, class of 1946. Alice found her professional calling at Central Michigan University, with her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology.

Alice joined Lansing Public Schools in 1951, where she was proud to have taught special needs children alongside Dr. Marvin Beekman. After the family’s move to Haslett, MI in 1960, Alice taught in a variety of classroom settings both with Haslett Public Schools, and later in her return to Lansing Schools. While teaching at Lansing’s Pattengill Jr. High School in 1974, she completed her Master of Science Degree in Education from Michigan State University. Alice finishing her 30-plus year education career as a Pattengill guidance counseling team member in 1993.

Post-retirement, Alice served as a stalwart member of the Michigan History Museum’s docent guild 1996-2012. She also became a tourist, with travels across the Americas, and as far away as Australia.

Alice’s family is most grateful for her recent care at Burcham Hills, E. Lansing; particularly for her Memory Care Caregivers and friends. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in her memory to the Greater Lansing Food Bank, Bath, MI.

Family will be hosting Alice’s memorial service Sunday April 3, 2022, at The Fledge, 1300 Eureka St. Lansing at 1:30 PM. Her final arrangements are with Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home, Lansing. Please access Alice’s memorial portal at www.dignitymemorial.com
