She was the youngest of three sisters born to William Isaac Guseman Harned and Nellie Marie Harned (nee Jackson).
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joseph Arnold, her sister, Mary McCleary (Paul), her sister, Betty Shuppe (Michael), and her grandson, Jonathon Arnold Furr.
She is survived by her daughter, Theresa Furr; son-in-law, Steven Furr; granddaughter, Jennifer Smiles (Todd); granddaughter, Julie Knakal (Anthony), and grandson Jason Furr (Jenna). Also, six great-grandchildren. Gavin Ray, Gabriella Ray, Gracyn Ray, Molly Furr, Cameron Furr, and Ryan Furr.
Her entire life centered around her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren. She was always in the process of creating something for someone. She handmade Christmas stockings for each family member. They are themed with each person’s interest. That is how she did things. Always thinking of others. She was a crafting genius. From making porcelain dolls to teaching doll making in her basement. She had many molds that she would pour and fire the pieces in the three kilns she had, making ceramic pieces, stained glass, tinsmithing, and woodworking! There was nothing she would not try.
She knitted and crocheted many items for Shriners Hospital, the Veterans, the children at Mott Children’s Hospital, and the families at Ronald McDonald House in Ann Arbor.
Each Christmas, she would sew stockings and fill them with toys and hygiene products for the children and families having to stay in Mott for the holidays. She sewed in the summer when it was too hot to go outside, and then the family would help her fill them at Thanksgiving.
Christmas was always a wonderful adventure. No matter how many family members there were, everyone got the exact number of gifts. Not only was the exact number of gifts, but each gift was also numbered. Each family member had to open each numbered gift at the same time. The last gift was always a beautiful ornament box with some cash inside. That made her so happy to watch each of us open our treasures. Even though it was always a struggle for her to get it all together, she certainly enjoyed the opening process.
She loved to travel. We took her on three cruises. The entire family went on the Disney Cruise together. We took her on a Caribbean cruise. She always wanted to go to Diamonds International and always came away with some purchases. Sometimes she just wanted to shop on the ship. We also took her on an Alaskan cruise. She rode in a helicopter to the glacier, where she rode and drove the dogsled. She traveled with us to many places within the United States. She really enjoyed going to new places and having new experiences.
Ann was a country farm girl growing up in West Virginia. She embraced her mountains and her heritage. She helped with the farm chores every day before and after school. She loved getting her hands dirty, gardening, and watching the fruits of her efforts grow into yummy produce. She would preserve as much as she could by canning or freezing.
Everyone loved her. So much so that she had many, many nicknames. Her nieces and nephews have always called her Aunt Nate. She had others as well. Hot Shot, The Witch, Mammaw, Granny Annie, just to mention a few. She always answered to any name anyone would bestow upon her.
She will be missed dearly by so many.
Peace comes to the family knowing she is again in the arms of the love of her life, Joe!
