Lansing, Michigan
Age 59, passed away at her home after a three year long battle with cancer on Thursday, April 2, 2020.
Betty was born September 26, 1960 in Lansing, MI and grew up in Williamston before moving to Lansing and starting her family. She began her career as a manager at Famous Recipe Chicken. She fondly recalled her coworkers from this job and stated many times it was her favorite. Betty then moved on to Michigan State University and worked in both food service and maintenance. She truly enjoyed working with the students, especially the football players at Holden Cafeteria. She later joined the Lansing School District as a lead cook while working at Everett High School. She met many close friends and once again enjoyed interacting with the high school students.
Betty was an amazing woman who dedicated her entire life to supporting those she loved. She made many sacrifices in her own life to make sure that the ones she loved were well cared for and happy. She was always there to listen and offer whatever advice she could or just be a shoulder to cry on. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy, and she was her grandchildren's greatest fan when attending their sporting events. She attended as many games as possible even when it required her to go in a wheelchair or get a video sent to her. In her free time, she enjoyed spending time with her family, playing cards and outdoor lawn games. Some of her favorites were Uno, Phase 10, Yahtzee, Badminton, Ladder golf, and Bocce Ball just to name a few.
Surviving are her husband of 25 years and companion of 44 years, W.D. Martin, Jr.; daughter and son-in-law, Shrie & Larry Pope; son and daughter-in-law, W. D. Jones, III & April Ayotte; 7 beloved grandchildren, and a host of many other loved family members and friends.
Betty was preceded in death by her father Cletus, Mother Bonnie, her brother Dale, and her sisters Cleta and Helen.
A celebration of Betty’s life is planned for Saturday April, 25, 2020 with a small remembrance ceremony to begin at 3pm then food and games to follow. The event will be held at Betty’s home.
