

She was born March 27, 1936, in Detroit, Michigan, daughter of Katharina J. (nee Krachenfels) and Arnold A. Gremling. Caroline was predeceased by her son, Phillip E. Carpenter, II, and sister, Catherine G. Baldwin. She is survived by children Theresa A. Edwards, Margaret M. Gorsuch (Jerry), Jeanne M. Morrison, Caroline A. Carpenter-Starr (Robert), Marie E. Lee and Dolores R. Carpenter (Louis); grandchildren Ian and Brett Edwards, Phillip E. Carpenter, III, Lacy Pennell, Nicholas Carpenter, Robert Lisk, Jr. (Tara) and Caroline A. Bergeron (Sky), Martin Lee and Alexander Hague, step-granddaughter Victoria Paul, several great grandchildren and six Baldwin nieces and nephews.
Caroline was a lover of the natural environment and enjoyed an enduring passion for time spent nurturing her gardens. She immersed herself in literature, was a feminist and defender of human rights, and held strongly the belief that she could make a difference in the world through political activism. Caroline held an abiding concern for those in need; her generosity was boundless, and, as a lifelong philanthropist, she touched the lives of many. She was loved and admired for her compassion and empathy, her generosity, her intellect, wit, and love of a life filled with laughter.
The family of Caroline Carpenter will be holding a memorial service and celebration of life on Saturday, March 15th, 2025 from 1:00-3:00pm at The Davis Nature Pavilion at Fenner Nature Center located at 2020 E. Mt. Hope Avenue Lansing, MI 48910.
