Eugene Stanley Schmitt

Eugene Stanley Schmitt from Lansing MI, aged 87, passed away on Thursday, February 22, 2024. He was born February 21, 1937, to Jacob and Anna Schmitt of Muskegon, Michigan. Eugene graduated from Muskegon Catholic Central High School in 1955, Macomb County Community College in 1972, and Wayne State University in 1975, with a B.S. in Criminal Justice. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the Army National Guard of Michigan and was honorably discharged in August of 1963.

Eugene graduated from the Michigan State Police Recruit School in 1964. He was stationed at the Battle Creek Post, Warren Post, and New Baltimore Post in Michigan. He was promoted to Detective Sergeant and assigned to the Special Investigations Unit in Detroit Intelligence and later to the Organized Crime Unit. In 1973, Eugene joined the staff of the Fire Marshal Division of the Michigan Department of State Police. He was promoted to First Lieutenant and retired in February of 1995. Additionally, Eugene was an usher and greeter at St. Therese Catholic Church. He worked for the St. Vincent Food Pantry located at his church. Lastly, he was a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus for 45 years.

On September 6, 1958. Eugene married his high school locker and homeroom friend Eleanor Schomogyi at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Muskegon Heights, MI. They celebrated 61 happy and blessed years together, until her passing on September 5, 2020.

Eugene was the pillar of family, who loved others unconditionally. He dedicated his life to his family, friends, and the service of others. Eugene was a humble, kind, and selfless man, who was deeply rooted in the Catholic faith.

Eugene was an avid runner, who completed countless 5K and 10K races. He jogged into his 70s. He was also an avid cyclist, who conquered the DALMAC several times, rode a Rocky Mountains Race in Colorado, and rode the Oregon coastline. Eugene enjoyed traveling and vacationing with his family and friends. He also loved building puzzles and playing cards.

Eugene is survived by his three children, Brian (Krisanne) Schmitt, Sheri (Jerry) Tuesburg, and Karen (Brian) Grass; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Jerry (Sue) Schmitt; sister, Cecilia Kerr; sisters-in-law, Theresa (Roy) Farrell, Pat (Frank) Schomogyi, and Evelyn (Joe) Horvath; brother-in-law, Mike (Dawn) Schomogyi; and many nieces, nephews, and special friends.

Eugene is preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Anna Schmitt; sisters, Katherine (Bud) Scofield, Madeline Schmitt, Martha (Bob) Beauleaux, Joyce (Jim) Muston, and Margaret (John) Houseman; and brothers, Jake Schmitt and Charles (Theresa) Schmitt.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at St. Therese Catholic Church, 102 Randolph St., Lansing. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. John Fain at 11:00 am. The Rite of Committal will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. A luncheon will follow at 2:00 pm at St Therese Catholic Church.
